Shutting your store down can be for many reasons, if you’re testing your site, planning on making a big announcement or going on vacation, the ability to shut your WordPress store down temporarily can be beneficial. 

WordPress does not currently have a maintenance or vacation mode, and the best solution we have found is to password protect your store. In this article, we will show you how to stop the public from viewing your store temporarily.

Password protect your store to stop people from viewing your store temporarily. 

When you protect your store, anyone without a password, won’t be able to:

  • Access your store;
  • View products or collections;
  • Complete orders.

When anyone navigates to your WordPress store, they’ll see a page that is protected by a password and a message explaining why the store is temporarily closed.

How to password protect your WordPress store

  • On the WordPress administration panel, click on “Online Store” and then “Preferences.”
  • Go to the “Password protection” section
  • Click “Enable password” and enter the password that you want to use, be careful not to use the same password you use to login to WordPress
  • If you want to display a message on the password-protected page, enter a message you want to show on the page, otherwise leave it blank for no message
  • Click Save.

How to remove password protection from your WordPress store

If you already have password protection on your store, you will need to remove it to allow anyone to access your store.

  • From the WordPress administration panel, click on “Online Store” and then “Preferences.”
  • Scroll to the Password protection section
  • Uncheck “Enable password.”
  • Click Save.
